In general, there are community’s problems that require an engineering solution. In this courses, several topics with different problems that face the community which requires a design that solves it. The topic that I was working on is the Landfill contribution in contaminating the soil and groundwater. The solution to that is to design a landfill liner system that is almost impermeable to water conductivity, which prevents water leakage into the soil.
In this course, our group was regarded as a group of workers who runs a firm responsible for designing the Landfill liner system. We learned the systematic way of proposing our design to the government. We created a proposal, progress report, interim report and final report of our design. Research had to be done in order to come up with two design that is economically affordable, high in quality, and conform with Ontario’s Landfill regulation.
This course helped to understand how engineering firms propose their design to clients effectively, which makes them the winning firm. I also developed several skills in research like critical thinking and communication. Communication between team member was vital in order to finish the final report on time.
