Undergraduate Research (Current Employment)

I’m conducting an undergraduate research in Lassonde School of Engineering at York University under the supervision of my Civil engineering professor: professor Rashid Bashir. I am examining the effect of climate change on the stability of embankments and highway slopes.

This job is the most vital experience in my career so far. It defines my career, passion, desire, and my status as a future engineer.

Job responsibilities:

I download weather data from Environment Canada’s website Then I compile those data using Excel. Those Environmental data are obtained for different regions across Canada. So far I’m in the process of compiling those weather data. The climate data will be used in a soil-atmosphere model to assess the effect on climate change on slope stability. The result of this research will be used by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) to assess the suitability of existing design procedures for embankments for the changing climate.

Experience:

I obtained knowledge of climate and climate change. In addition, I acquired and improved several technical and computer skills. I tremendously improved several skills associated with Excel because I use excel in my research work all the time. I used to have a very poor knowledge of using Excel before doing this research. Now, I even integrate programming software like Visual Basic and Matlab in order to facilitate the usage of my data through Excel.

Furthermore, I apply the elements of formal communication when interacting with the supervisor whether in person or by e-mail. Also, the professor gives me feedback on the way I conduct my communication. I use his feedback to improve my communication. Also, I apply the elements of effective presentation when presenting my results to the supervisor using PowerPoint slides.
